You’re a hard worker. Yet, you haven’t received a promotion in quite some time, it seems. If you’ve been in your current role for a while, it’s easy to assume your promotion should be coming soon, but that’s not always the case. As a career coach with over 20 years of experience, I have a few tips to help you get that promotion you want and deserve.
BE POSITIVE AND FOCUS ON YOUR CURRENT JOB
It might be tempting to lose morale and motivation in your current role when you’re feeling unappreciated in the workplace, but keep pushing! Employees get promoted when they’re able to maintain a positive attitude and persevere under stress.
MAKE SURE YOU ARE QUALIFIED
Are you missing a key skill or certification for the job you want? Most times, you can negotiate, but your chances will improve if you’re as qualified as possible. Are you able to work towards a requirement, like taking online classes or signing up for a training? Whatever skill you may be missing, make sure you take the steps needed to obtain it.
MAKE SURE YOUR BOSS KNOWS YOUR GOALS
If you don’t have consistent meetings with your manager on what you’re working on and how you’re doing, now’s the time to set them up. Those meetings will be a great way to get feedback from your manager on your performance, document your progress, as well as express your desire to move up in the company. Sometimes, getting a promotion is as simple as expressing your interest. If your manager doesn’t know about your interests, they may think you’re content in your current role. Be open to criticism, ask questions, and take notes! Your manager is your ally – use them wisely!
MAKE YOUR MANAGER LOOK GOOD
Enthusiastically go above and beyond your job description to make your manager’s job easier, and give them credit! If you’ve made a mistake, let your boss know before their manager finds out. Be solutions-oriented and continue looking for opportunities to help your team. The art of managing up is complex, but once you’ve mastered it, you’re can accomplish anything in the workplace.
AVOID GOSSIP IN THE WORKPLACE
In order to be considered for a promotion, it’s important that you demonstrate trustworthiness and integrity. Resist temptation by indulging in gossip and avoiding coworkers who are always involved in drama is a great way to make sure you stand out as an honest employee.
Overall, continue working hard and be patient! Your promotion will come at the right time, and if you follow the steps above, you’ll be one of the top contenders when the role for you opens up. Continue checking in with your boss and asking for opportunities to improve to make sure you remain on the right track!
