For most of us COVID-19 redefined the landscape of our corporate work environments in a matter of days. While social distancing and proximity restrictions are a must, it is also so important to keep inclusion top of mind while embracing our new normal. I’ve worked with many companies over the years on their inclusion and diversity efforts, and over the past two years really felt the momentum building around the topic. I encourage leaders to stay committed to their inclusion efforts while navigating this uncertain time. We need each other, more now than ever!
Every day I see something on the news that makes me scared, anxious, and worried. Add those emotions to the feeling of isolation that social distancing can cause and it’s not a pretty picture! We all handle fear and stress in different ways, but I think it’s safe to say that we’re all going through a range of emotions during this time. Here are some suggestions on how to promote inclusion during these everchanging times:
1. Virtual Meetings are Key: So much of communication is nonverbal, so being able to see your teammates helps cut down on miscommunication. Especially for those who are missing that personal interaction.
2. The More Information the Better: With so many changes happening every day, it’s easy to get caught up in the “spin.” The more information that you can provide employees will keep them informed and deter them from creating their own story about what’s going on and what’s to come.
3. Daily Check In’s: Each of us has been impact by COVID-19 in different ways, some more devasting than others. Check in with your employees, and not just on business stuff…ask them how they’re doing. Devote the first 5 minutes of every staff meeting to personal check in’s and interesting, non-work related tidbits…let’s face it, we could all use a little distraction right now.
4. Have Some Virtual Fun: Make your virtual meetings something to look forward to. Have each employee pick a fun background for the meeting, wear their favorite team jersey during the meeting, or have everyone find a quiet place outside to take the meeting. Schedule virtual happy hours with your team to decompress from the week or celebrate successes.
5. Encourage Feedback: Don’t let physical distance hinder the flow of feedback. Feedback is even more important when working remotely. Take the time to ask the team, how the virtual set up is going and ask for suggestions on how to make it better.
6. Expand Your Virtual Circle: Schedule a virtual meeting instead of sending an email…especially if you don’t work with the person on a regular basis. This will help foster a new relationship and build your virtual circle. Also, use social media platforms like LinkedIn to broaden your virtual circle.
By keeping inclusion top of mind, my hope is that we emerge from this more connected than ever!
